• Smooth out seams or imperfections inside narrow-necked vessels.
• Reach tight or deep areas that fingers or larger tools can’t access.
• Improve finish quality in hard-to-reach spots, especially on slipcast work.

🧽 Construction and history of the sponge

Traditionally, potters made their own diddlers by:

• Attaching a cellulose or synthetic sponge to a wooden dowel or stick.
• Securing it with a rubber band, string, or waterproof adhesive.
• Sometimes cutting or shaping the sponge to better suit their needs.
